Journalist Visa

General Information on Journalist Visa

A Journalist Visa is issued to foreign media professionals who intend to visit India for journalistic, documentary, editorial, or promotional work. This includes those working in print, broadcast, digital media, or producing audio-visual content that covers news, documentaries, travel, or current affairs.

The visa is generally granted for a short duration (up to 3 months) and may be extended in special cases upon approval. This visa requires prior coordination with the Embassy of India’s Press Office and an in-person interview during the application process.

Note:
Applicants must strictly follow the intended purpose of travel. Misrepresentation or deviation from the approved visa category may lead to visa rejection, legal consequences, or deportation.

Who Can Apply for a Journalist Visa?

This visa is applicable to:

  • Professional journalists and reporters
  • Travel writers or photojournalists
  • Documentary filmmakers (excluding commercial film production)
  • Editors, correspondents, producers, or directors working with TV, radio, or digital platforms
  • Owners or staff of media outlets producing audio-visual news content

Applicants must submit a letter from their employer/agency clearly stating their designation, purpose of visit, and nature of work.

 Key Guidelines:

  • A valid passport with at least 6 months validity and 3 blank pages is required.
  • Visa is issued based on the application content and interview outcome.
  • Visa validity begins from the date of issue, not from the date of travel.
  • Application processing may take up to 2 months — apply well in advance.
  • An interview at the Embassy of India is mandatory, and additional documents may be requested.
  • Visa is usually granted for up to 3 months. Longer durations require justification and special approval.
  • Travel to restricted/protected areas requires additional permits, even with a valid visa.
